Merida Santiago Boutique hotel – where comfort meets style

If there is one spot on the Yucatan peninsula where you should go just to stay at a hotel it’s Merida and the hotel is the Merida Santiago Boutique hotel. Once arrived at this gem of a boutique hotel with only seven rooms you will never want to leave.

The attention to luxurious but not over-the-top detail paid by the owners, a Mexican-Dutch couple, is amazing. From the showerhead that sits high enough to accommodate a two-meter tall person, via the open restaurant and bar area by the pool to the logoed glass bottles on the bedside tables that are filled with fresh drinking water and can be refilled on your own, too, everything here is thought-through and sustainable. The staff really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Also, they help you organise tours and transport that are worthwhile and no rip-offs.

And then there is the kitchen and the cook.

The a la carte breakfast makes you want to stay at least 7 days to try everything on it. Every dish looks like it came from a Michelin starred chef. Not a surprise really, since this is where Jacob the cook, who speaks English and French fluently, by the way, was trained. Any allergies, intolerances, special wishes like fluffy gluten-free waffles? Nothing seems impossible here. Oh, and he’s willing to share his knowledge, too. Just book one of the cooking classes including a shopping trip to the local market or a mezcal tasting at the bar.

From 6.30 to 7.30 pm, there is a so-called social hour. A drink on the house for every guest in the pool area accompanied by some tapas, though tapas doesn’t really give these delicious amuse-bouches enough credit.  And yes, there even serve you a beer when you’re lying around in the pool trying to cool down from the Meridan heat.

During our travels the Merida Santiago Boutique Hotel felt like an oasis made relax, restore and revive you.

And even is Merida is not on your list when touring the Yucatan peninsula this hotel should make you change your plans.
